Since 1939, the Society of Allied Weight Engineers has been promoting recognition of mass properties as a specialized discipline. One principal method of accomplishing this is to make technical content available to its members. The SAWE publishes technical papers and proceedings from International Conferences through its "Weight Engineering Journal" and on the Internet. The SAWE developed and promotes the use of engineering recommended practices for the mass properties profession. The SAWE has produced college level textbooks covering aircraft and marine mass properties engineering. The SAWE also publishes the "Weight Engineer's Handbook", a collection of engineering formulas and data, used as a reference by engineers of all disciplines.
Technical papers, textbooks, SAWE Handbook and Recommended Practices are available for purchase from the Society.
Over 2,000 technical papers have been presented at SAWE Annual International Conferences, dating from the first such conference in 1941. SAWE technical papers cover the current state of advancement or an evolving aspect of the profession, fundamental concepts in mass properties engineering, and advancements in other fields and disiplines.

As mass properties engineers, we must periodically verify the predicted or standardized mass properties of a vehicle, vessel, or other item by measurement. We must:
· inspect and inventory what is or is not on the vehicle, vessel, or item to be measured
· correlate the as-measured configuration to the predicted (or a standard) configuration
· obtain, measure, or estimate the relevant mass properties of the items that differ between the predicted or standard configuration and the as-measured configuration
· perform the measurement tests and collect data
· compute final mass properties results from the predicted, measured, and estimated data collected
Often, we face very limited time and other resources to perform the above processes.
· Maritime Weight Engineers often must make on-the-spot weight estimates of onboard or missing items during ship inspections
· This situation may also be encountered by mass properties engineers in other construction and transportation industries
This forum will explore strategies and practices in optimizing on-the-spot weight estimates during an inspection, when only visual observation and very limited data about any item are available on site due to time and resource constraints.
· This type of weight estimating will be compared to weight estimating during various stages of design, where databases are accessible.
· The importance of the number of items to be estimated to achieve acceptable overall weight accuracy will be also discussed.
The forum’s leaders are interested in discussing practices, tips, and shared experiences for this type of weight estimation among the participants.
This product is a link to the video recording of the Zoom Fourm that took place on March 22, 2022. This video length is 1 hour and 30 minutes. |
Weight Engineering is a periodic publication, which reports topics of interest from both the international office and individual chapters. Feature articles are also included, as are "specials" from time to time. A post conference issue is published annually and includes abstracts of the papers presented at the annual conference, as well as a full reprint of the paper selected as the "best paper" at the conference. Advertisements are encouraged from vendors and suppliers who wish to address the weight engineering community.

To ensure that we use the highest quality photographs possible in the Journal, we thought that it might be advantageous to put forth the following tips for conference photographers.
We are running very short of cover photographs for the cover of Weight Engineering, the Journal of the SAWE.
We have used aircraft photos on the last three issues and need to have some variety, i.e., ships, rockets, satellites, ground vehicles, etc.
Each photo should be accompanied by a short (one paragraph) write-up to go on the Table of Contents page. If you wish, a longer article on the subject of the photograph can be sent to be used in the Journal.
We will consider all contributions. Thanks for your help.

Weight Engineering is a fundamental and vital field in the design, construction, and operation of all marine vehicles, from sailboats to aircraft carriers. The Marine Vehicle Weight Engineering textbook provides both the novice and experienced weight engineer or naval architect with a complete view of how weight engineering (or mass properties engineering) is accomplished for military and commercial marine vehicles.
The topics covered include Ship Design Requirements; Ship Weight Estimating Process; Weight Control and Improvement Programs; Weight and Center of Gravity Computation; Weight Measurement and Validation; and Basic Surface Ship and Submarine Naval Architecture.

Moments of Inertia and Products of Inertia of a Rigid Body
Design Principles of Measurement Systems
Giorgio Previati, Massimiliano Gobbi, Gianpiero Mastinu
Politecnico Di Milano
Department Of Mechanical Engineering
Milano, Italy
A book on moments and products of inertia for mass properties engineers. It is not a manual, but rather a reference handbook of principles of physics and the means of achieving technical solutions to obtain measurements of the rigid body's mass properties, with emphasis on the body's Moments of Inertia and Products of Inertia, and their associated uncertainty.
