Key Words23. WEIGHT ENGINEERING - STRUCTURAL ESTIMATION
AbstractDuring the preliminary design and proposal phases for some of the modern military aircraft and missile programs, it is desirable, and often necessary, for the mass properties engineer to make preliminary weight estimates for low observable materials and penalties. The purpose of this paper is to present a brief history of the origins of low observables, an introduction to radar technology, Radar Cross Section (RCS), low observable materials, RCS reduction techniques, and weight estimation methodology for some of the stealth enhancing treatments that will aid mass properties engineers inexperienced with stealth technology. Infrared (IR) signature, acoustical, and exhaust emission signature reduction techniques are beyond the scope of this paper.
