AbstractGrumman's current step in automating airframe assembly--the Dual-Robot Assembly Cell --- is described herein. The cell addresses multi-robot assembly of complex structures such as bulkheads, fuselage panels, floor decks, etc. Cell attributes include: close tolerance/high-load robots, generic fixturing, semi-structural part storage, ""smart"" sensing (force and vision systems), intelligent controls, dual-robot configuration, and fastener support system. The cell has been integrated into Grumman's overall factory business/technical management system. This represents a complete vertical slice from engineering (product definition) down to the shop floor.
