Abstract

Lockheed-Georgia Company was awarded a contract to redesign the C-5A wing box structure. The program objective is to design, test, fabricate and install a wing modification kit on the C-5A to provide an additional 30,000 flight hours. The weight status and Design To Cost status for this program have been summarized at a point fourteen months into the design phase. This presentation is an overview of the Weight and Design To Cost Programs for this contract.
Weight and balance effects for the wing box changes have been identified and a weight trend chart was developed. A structural weight summary was prepared and the current predicted delivery weight i s compared to the specification weight. The center of gravity effect was determined; and i t verified that the change was within the original prescribed limits.

The Design To Cost activities are summarized. Methods used to estimate the initial target costs and for tracking changes through the design phase are discussed. The general format used to report cost data, including a cost trend chart similar to the weight trend chart, is presented. Cost numbers used in the presentation are shown for illustration purposes only and do not represent actual costs. Although not part of the original contract, a subsequent contract was received to determine Life Cycle Costs. Therefore, additional methods were developed with the concurrence and assistance of the Air Force, to identify the operating, maintenance and other costs of ownership.

Methods for managing the weight and design to cost programs are also presented. Weight/cost guidelines used to assist in making decisions on trade studies were developed. The organizational relationship of the weight and cost groups and the establishment and purpose of separate Design To Cost teams are discussed. The effect that the Design To Cost Program will have on Company profits i s presented.
