Abstract

Technology is the vehicle which industry uses to improve its product. Forecasting technological change involves analysis of two components--evolutionary and revolutionary change. Evolutionary change is the logical extrapolation of current capabilities. Revolutionary change is more difficult to project, because it represents technological breakthroughs. Both objective and subjective analyses must be applied to predict from observed trends. This briefing is an assessment of current state-of-the-art in V/STOL technology. An examination is made of the transfer of technology from helicopters to V/STOL aircraft. Near-future projections focus on potential improvements from the application of advanced composite materials and advanced systems to V/STOL design.
