Abstract

Much of the architecture for the conceptual design weight estimation methodology in use today was developed during the 1960's. When these methods were developed, aircraft configuration, design and construction techniques were fairly "standard" across the industry. While many of these methods have been updated over the years, their basic philosophy and capabilities have remained virtually the same. Newer, more advanced aircraft configurations, design practices, and general technology improvements have surpassed the capability of the older methods to reliably predict aircraft weights during the conceptual design stage. The development of an advanced weight estimation methodology is necessary to keep pace with the ever-changing technology. One such method uses state-of-the-art computer concepts to provide a flexible, accurate, and comprehensive weight estimation capability.
