Boeing Defense, Space & Security’s Phantom Works division is seeking an Experienced Mass Properties Engineer (Level 3) at the St Louis site to support upcoming Fixed Wing Advanced Development Programs.   The individual in this role will play a key element in shaping the future for Boeing and our DoD Customers leading mass properties weight estimation, tracking, management, and key design trades to mature an air vehicle concept.  As a mass properties engineer in Phantom Works, you will be a part of a team focused on the implementation of model based engineering.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct advanced design weight estimation to develop preliminary weight estimates to support advanced design proposals, prototyping efforts, trade studies, etc.
  • Perform estimation, calculation, and measurement/verification of mass, center of gravity, and inertias of components, assemblies and completed vehicles or systems.
  • Provides complex vehicle or system configuration guidance.
  • Support Mass Properties control and management plan execution across the program.
  • Coordinate with SME’s across the program to understand weight impacts of design decisions.
  • Support the development and presentation of weight status or technical data to design teams, program leadership, and the customer.
  • Support the development, population, enhancement and maintenance of the mass properties database including the generation of weight and balance reports.
  • Review and support detail and installation drawing release processes.
  • Support development of center of gravity envelopes to ensure loadability requirements are met.
  • Creates, develops and implements new processes and tools to facilitate improved design and analysis capabilities.
  • Works under minimal direction.

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in engineering or related technical field.
  • 7+ years of Mass Properties experience.
  • 2+ years of experience with 3D modeling software such as Unigraphics (NX), CATIA, and Teamcenter.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Active Secret U.S. Security Clearance. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.).  Investigation type and last investigation date must be visible on resume.
  • Aerospace knowledge of fixed wing military aircraft in key disciplines (Airframe, Avionics, Propulsion, Hydraulics, etc.).
  • Mass Properties team/engineering leadership and project planning experience.
  • Experience with mass properties reporting in alignment with SAWE Recommended Practice 7 & 8 or MIL-STD-1374 mass properties weight control standards.
  • Experience with part actual weight measurement, aircraft weight and balance, inertia measurement, fuel calibration testing, etc.
  • Experience using a mass properties database  to track weight, center of gravity, & inertia)

Typical Education and experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master +3 years' related work experience). The Boeing Defense, Space and Security division is seeking a MQ-25 Mass Properties Lead in Hazelwood, MO.

The MQ-25 Air Vehicle team is seeking a Mass Properties / Weights Engineering Lead (Level 4) to join the team in Hazelwood, Missouri. The MQ-25 program is working the Engineering and Manufacturing Development of 7 flight vehicles and two full-scale test articles.  This position will be responsible for coordination of the mass properties team, completion of vehicle weight reporting, and final aircraft weights.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads a team of Mass Properties engineers to control weight and balance characteristics of the aircraft in order to meet performance requirements.

  • Responsible for developing and presenting weight status or technical data to program management, the customer or design groups.

  • Guides and mentors other mass properties engineers on the program.

  • Responsible for coordination of full aircraft weighing and weight reports.

  • Determines approaches to and leads development of, complex weight, balance and mass properties data. Leads the definition of complex weight, balance and mass properties related design requirements. Participates in developing challenging customer specification commitments. 

  • Determines approaches to and leads development of, vehicle or system configuration guidance. 

  • Leads high-level weight control efforts. 

  • Oversees the estimation, calculation, measurement and verification of mass, weight, stiffness and inertias. Leads development and maintenance of weight, balance and mass properties accounting systems and oversees weight and balance reports.

The Boeing Defense, Space and Security division is seeking an Experienced Mass Properties Engineer in Berkeley, MO. This position will provide Program support for missiles, weapons, fighter, and trainer aircraft including programs such as the F-15, F/A-18, and T-7A.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Conduct advanced design weight estimation to develop preliminary weight estimates to support advanced design proposals, prototyping efforts, trade studies, etc.

The Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS), Vertical Lift division is seeking a Senior Mass Properties Engineer to lead Mass Properties control and management located in Ridley Park, PA. This position will be a part of a mass properties team that supports all vertical lift programs in Philadelphia. The Vertical Lift Division is focused on designing the next generation FLRAA (Future Long Range Assault Aircraft) for the US Army.   Vertical Lift also provides a wide range of support on programs across the enterprise, primary the Army’s AH-6, AH-64, CH-47, MH-47, the Air Force’s CV-22, MH-139, and Marines/Navy’s MV-22, CMV-22.  Along with these programs the Ridley Park site supports a large portfolio of products including other Vertical Lift Programs, Commercial Aircraft, Fixed Wing Fighters, Satellites, Space Launch Systems, and many others.

Position Description:

Provide System Engineering (SE) and Mass Properties Engineering expertise relative to in-space vehicles and launch vehicles for the System Analysis Branch (EV74) supporting the Space Launch System (SLS) Program, Core Stage (CS), and Exploration Upper Stage (EUS).   

The successful candidate will coordinate and interface with multiple engineering disciplines, system elements, and customers, as well as participate in reviews, meetings, working groups, and task teams.  The candidate will provide leadership and/or support for the development of mass properties assessments for SLS.  

The candidate will provide and perform the following tasks:

  • Lead and support the development and review of key system engineering products for SLS milestones and provide technical expertise to technical and programmatic reviews.
  • Create mass properties estimations and provide technical insight, uncertainty analysis, and appraisal of the conservatism used in the specific estimating processes used.
  • Generate Technical Performance Metric (TPM) charts and mass properties reports which include full dry mass properties (mass, center of gravity, moments of inertia, and products of inertia) and other reports suitable for input into trajectory and G&NC design and analysis assessments.
  • Perform conceptual mass properties parametric estimations, bottoms-up calculations, mass distributions, moment of inertia calculations, and weight control planning.
  • Lead and guide the technical integration of the mass properties and integration analysis team products within the team and across affected disciplines.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with designers and stress analysts and use expertise to identify areas for potential mass savings in design and manufacturing.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with stakeholders in the GN&C, operations, and performance disciplines/areas to improve and enhance vehicle performance and operational objectives.
  • Proactively work to create and implement new processes and tools to facilitate improved design and analysis capabilities.
  • Perform verification and validation of mass properties report data for the team to ensure accuracy of the input data as well as the output data from the NASA Mass Properties Analysis and Reporting Tool (MPART).

 

 

Qualifications:

A degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Systems Engineering or related technical field is required.  A degree from an ABET-accredited institution is desired. Educational requirements are the equivalent of an MS with at least 18 total years of relevant experience or a BS with at least 20 total years of relevant experience in systems engineering and integration.

The candidate is required to have:

  • Experience working with design teams and with system configuration, design, and analysis personnel.
  • Excellent mathematical skills and the ability to perform analytical assessments of vehicle systems, subsystems, and components is required.
  • Ability to breakdown complex problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns.
  • Experience using MATLAB and some proficiency creating tools or modifying software applications for a specific use is required.
  • Critical thinking, effective communications, and problem-solving skills are required.

  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills are required.

Essential Functions

 

Office environment.
