On September 30th 2010 we will be hosting the fourth SNAUG meeting.  The meeting will be held in conjunction with the Society of Allied Weight Engineers Houston Regional Conference on Mass Properties in Houston, Texas.

SNAUG would be of interest to active ShipWeight users as well as those who are considering acquiring it.

The meeting will cover presentation of and training in:

New ShipWeight 10.0 features, including the new ShipWeight “Playground” (inputting weight information in a temporary check area prior to making the data go “live”)

Enhanced functions; existing functions in ShipWeight that have been enhanced in version 10.0

Frequently overlooked functions; useful existing features that are often forgotten

Reporting capability

We are soliciting suggestions for specific topics that attendees would like to see presented.  In addition we hope to include user-presentations on their experiences with ShipWeight.  Please do not hesitate to contact us!

The meeting is an excellent opportunity to:

Meet other ShipWeight users in an informal setting for exchanging experiences and discussions on best practices

Meet and give feedback to us as developers of ShipWeight and weigh in with your opinions

Learn about new ShipWeight 10.0 functionality as well as refresh knowledge on existing features

Participate in making priorities for future development of ShipWeight

The registration fee is US$ 75 and this covers breakfast, lunch and snacks.  In the coming weeks we will be sending out more details on the meeting; in the meantime if you have any questions or know someone else who might be interested in attending and receiving future notices, please feel free to contact us at runar@bas.no.

Training

Registration is now open for the Training classes to be offered at the Regional Conference.  Please see below for detailed class descriptions.

Ship Inclining Experiment This class has been cancelled.

Instructors: William A. Fox, John J. McMullen Associates, Inc., SAWE Fellow

The objectives of this one-day class are to provide the student with an introduction to the principles of naval architecture and to marine terminology, and to discuss and demonstrate the inclining of a vessel to determine its weight and center of gravity. ASTM F 1321-90, Standard Guide for Conducting a Stability Test, will be used as a text for this class.  Following the classroom session, the class will travel to, and board a vessel for a practical demonstration of an inclining. A brief light ship survey will be completed, drafts and specific gravity of the water will be taken, and inclining weight will be moved to obtain a plot of tangents and inclining moments. The resulting data will be processed and the vessel's light ship displacement and centers of gravity will be determined at the conclusion. The class will conclude with a short open-book test and exercise to confirm that the student has gained an understanding of the theory and practice of inclining a vessel.

Measurement of Mass Properties This class has been cancelled.

Instructors: H. Wayne Clay, Lockheed Martin, Kurt Wiener-Chief Engineer of Space Electronics

This class will demonstrate and teach Mass Property measuring techniques for missiles and control surfaces. The Mass Properties Measurement class will contain both a classroom presentation and a laboratory session. The class will consist of approximately three hours of lecture and five hours of hands-on laboratory session with participants making mass properties measurements.  The classroom discussion will include Mass definition and Mass measurement techniques. Force measurement methods such as spring scales, load cells, strain gauges, and rebalance technology will be discussed.  The MOI definition and its relationship to torque and acceleration and measurement techniques will be included.  The definition of Product of Inertia (POI) will be discussed and how it relates to Principle Axes definition, measurement, and calculation techniques.  Laboratory Exercises will include Mass measurement, MOI measurement using a torsion rod and the bifilar method. POI measurement/calculation and Principle axis measurement /calculation will be taught.  It is the intent of this class to provide the student with an understanding of the methods for measuring moment of inertia. The class will conclude with the taking of a test to verify that the class has provided the students with the basic understanding of how to measure moment of inertia of a missile or a control surface.

Spacecraft Weight Control  This class has been cancelled.

Additional information will be available soon.

Marine Systems Weight Estimating Methods

Instructors: Andy Schuster – SBM Offshore, Runar Aasen – BAS Engineering, Ålesund Norway, www.bas.no

The instructors have combined a vast amount of maritime experience and varied backgrounds and perspectives to create a very interesting and useful classroom course to be held at the conference hotel. It is a full day class split between the fundamental methods weight estimating for marine system and practical applications using MS Excel Spreadsheets and a ShipWeight by BAS Engineering. The class will begin with reviews of the weight estimating methods described in SAWE Recommended Practice 14 “Marine Weight Estimating and Margin Policy Guideline,” followed by practical examples. The class will cover the theory, and application of these methods on specific examples and for whole ship design. The appropriateness of each method for each stage of ship design, construction and operation will be discussed. The students will develop a ship weight estimate for a 200 foot ship using the methods in RP14 and then using the modern ship weight estimating software “ShipWeight.”

Students should bring laptops with MS Excel® and Windows 2000 or later to take advantage of all the exercises.
