Title: Mass Properties Engineer (mid-career)

Location: Littleton Colorado

Job Description:
This position is located in Denver, CO and supports multiple Space programs. This Mass Properties Engineer site lead position supports the overall Central Systems Engineering Team by executing and leading dedicated Mass Properties Engineering duties. Duties include: calculation of mass properties by hand or solid modeling systems, updating and maintaining mass properties databases, performing basic trade studies, make presentations at program design reviews, leading mass properties audits, developing test procedures and performing mass properties measurements, then reducing and interpreting measurement data into final user values, facilitating Mass Properties Control Boards and weight reduction teams, documenting and publishing all types of analysis reports, and organizing and leading the mass properties effort of junior engineers.

Basic Qualifications

  • Significant demonstrated experience performing mass properties analysis with verification methods and equipment, to determine weight, center of gravity, mass moments of inertia, and products of inertia from assemblies down to the component level; tracking changes impacting mass properties; preparing and presenting mass properties reports and supporting design reviews
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and interactions of other mechanical analysis groups including stress, structural loads and dynamics, thermodynamics, aerodynamics, propulsion and power systems, as well as subsystem designers to promote mass properties efficient design alternatives
  • Experience developing Mass Properties math model and using mass properties database, and analysis tools
  • Experience with the responsibility of supporting and being the POC, or lead of a group of engineers
  • Experience with measurement procedure development and data reduction
  • Active Secret clearance with an investigation in the past 5 years

Desired skills

  • 9+ years' experience performing Mass Properties engineering activities
  • Experience with LEO and GEO satellites and space vehicle subsystems
  • Experience as a key contributor or as a lead for weight control and reduction efforts
  • Experience and familiarity with industry standards in the mass properties control and management process
  • Ability to resolve technical concerns WRT weight reduction implementation
  • Ability to write Mass Properties procedures, practices and/or specifications
  • Good written (preparing monthly or quarterly weight status reports) and oral communication (presenting Mass Properties summaries to management and customers)
  • Experience with configuration assessment and prediction of mass properties based on preliminary design models as well as the evolving released design
  • Experience working on integrated product team, interacting with other engineering disciplines, technicians, subcontractors, and customer
  • Familiarity with manufacturing and assembly techniques & processes
  • Experience in training and leading junior mass properties engineers in mass properties analysis, control, verification and database methods
  • Supervising mass properties functions, determining tasks priorities and scheduling work, working with integrated product teams and interacting with engineers, technicians, subcontractors, and customers. Interface with senior program and customer management including advising on critical technical issues and their relationship to technical and programmatic performance
  • An understanding of statistical methods of combining error sources, assessing confidence levels, and general descriptive statistics
  • Self directed, able to multitask, strive for customer satisfaction
  • Experience with Mathcad and/or Matlab
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Project)
  • Demonstrated ability as a team player to build consensus among peers and build effective relationships with team members
  • Effectively manage change
