Abstract

This paper is intended to survey the possibilities offered by materials technology for reducing weight in aero engines. Improvements in efficiency which will save fuel and thus reduce the overall weight are not dealt with in this paper.
There are basically three ways in which weight can be reduced:
1. Materials of higher strength
2. More effective use of material by lightweight construction
3. More effective use of material through better acquaintance with the behavior of materials in operation.
These three possibilities will be dealt with in the light of selected examples, problems and trends will be discussed and limits will be estimated.
