The purpose of this paper is to outline for the members of the Society of Weight Engineers the United Air Lines approach to:
1. Airport analysis, and
2. The ‘Follow On’ process of producing turbine operating weights.
The following methods of airport analysis and gross weight calculations are being used at United’s San Francisco Flight Engineering Division. O u r system was designed at the start of jet service in 1959 to show compliance with FAA’s Special Regulation SR-4228. Steady improvement of our methods has been due largely to experience gained.
Turbine take-off weights were originally computed using fight path overlays over runway and obstacle profiles. This method, while adequate for piston take-off weights, proved inadequate for jets. Since 100% temperature accountability is required for turbine take-off weights, an easier method of computation became necessary.
The usually tedious job of preparing airplane operating weights is a result of a specific Federal requirement. This requirement states t h a t 9n analysis of each airport runway must be made whenever operations at that airport are planned. CAR 40-519 para. 8, requires take-off, en route and landing weight limitations to be part of a manual for ‘Guidance of Flight and Ground Personnel.’ The United Air Lines airplane Flight Manuals prepared for each airplane type, i e : E-8, B-720, 727 and Caravelle, contain a chapter for operating weights.
