Abstract

The commuter airlines have experienced very high growth rates during the past two years. This strong growth is anticipated to continue as the U.S. air transportation system is reshaped by deregulation. The regulatory changes, coupled with increasing passenger acceptance of commuter air travel have resulted in a strong demand for new, improved small transport aircraft and have significantly improved the opportunities for the application of advanced technology to the design of these aircraft. This paper previews potential benefits of this advanced technology, NASA’s proposed Small Transport Aircraft Technology (STAT) research, and some current research efforts directed at this class of aircraft.
