Abstract

A method is presented for placing probability confidence belts on the prediction errors which will result from the use of any weight estimation technique. A brief discussion is given of the applicability of the properties of the Normal and Student’s t distributions to this problem. Examples are given of confidence limits placed upon a sample of cargo aircraft wing weight estimates for which the variance is unknown.
The usefulness of any weight estimating technique is highly dependent upon the magnitude and distribution of the prediction errors which are encountered. In this paper a technique is presented for establishing confidence belts on these errors.
