This paper is intended to promote a better understanding of dynamic balancing. First, a brief explanation is given of the technique used by MRC to measure unbalance. A discussion of the validity of dual correction weights to perfectly balance any rigid body is then given, using an interesting approach-resolving the test specimen into two centers-of-mass rather than one.
Several simple cases of interest are then analyzed qualitatively using the dual mass centers to promote an appreciation of the dual correction weights. A practical explanation of the concept of product of inertia is given. Following is a summary of the points established.
Once the basic understanding of both the measurement technique and the correction technique has been established, the general problem of determining correction weight values and locations is treated in vector notation. The vector use is simple but effective, and brief definitions are given to support the analysis.
The resultant equations are translated into a BASIC computer program, which is listed in the paper. In particular, the method used for determination of the angular position of the correction weight is discussed.
Finally, several simple cases are reviewed using computer run results to support the intuitive judgments that can be made beforehand.
