Abstract

This paper was presented at the September 26, 1956 meeting of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Society of Aeronautical Weight Engineers. For the past two decades aircraft structural design and analysis have developed at a moderate pace, and have presented few problems of revolutionary importance. In recent years, however, three developments have appeared which to date have caused appreciable difficulty and which promise to present a great deal more. The three problems which will be of greatest importance to the structural engineer in the future are listed as (a) material fatigue, (b) aeroelastic effects, and (c) temperature effects. These problems are discussed and their general effect on the airplane weight indicated. The temperature problem is considered the one of greatest magnitude and is one which will place a maximum limit on airplane speed. This problem is considered in more detail and an estimate is made of the limiting effects on airplane performance
