Abstract

This paper presents a new concept for obtaining precise, self-validating measurement data in aircraft weighing operations. It is called the MOMENT SAMPLING CONCEPT whereby statistics are derived from numerous moment samplings that are converted i n t o reliable weight measurement data via use of a desk computer. This procedure therefore, results i n better weight measurement data than the prevalent procedure whereby the actual aircraft weight is compared with the predicted weight and the resultant weight measurement validity is based on the correlation between the two weights.

The purpose of the MOMENT SAMPLING CONCEPT is to provide a many numbered sample space from which can be extracted a necessary and sufficient quantity of events for statistical processing by a desk computer. The computer program accepts the moment inputs and prints out the mean weight and the standard deviation and the mean center of gravity and the standard deviation.

The attributes of this MOMENT SAMPLING CONCEPT are listed as follows:
(1) Measurable confidence levels.
(2) Symbolic logic utilized to support the concept.
(3) The weight of the measured load can exceed the capacity of the weighing system.

A desk computer i s required t o implement this concept. Appendix B contains a MOMENT SAMPLING program printout of a weighing and balancing exercise utilizing an Olivetti-Underwood Programma 101 desk computer.
